Common Ground

Voor veel Alkmaarders vormt de Grote Kerk Alkmaar de huiskamer van de stad. Maar wat is dat precies, een huiskamer van de stad? En wie voelt zich hier thuis? De Grote Kerk heeft altijd een centrale rol gespeeld in de geschiedenis van Alkmaar. Ook vandaag de dag is de kerk voor veel inwoners een ijkpunt. Toch is dat niet voor iedereen het geval.
Voor het kunstwerk dat Nynke Koster speciaal voor de Grote Kerk Alkmaar heeft gemaakt is zij de wijken van de stad ingetrokken om in gesprek te gaan met bewoners over hun gevoel van thuis. Zij sprak onder meer met vluchtelingen uit Syrië, bewoners uit de volkse Bloemwijk en mensen uit de Marokkaanse en Turkse gemeenschap over het gevoel van thuis. Het kunstwerk brengt verschillende gemeenschappen met hun eigen culturen samen op het kunstwerk. De verschillende verhalen heeft Koster, samen met afgietsels van ornamenten uit de kerk, verwerkt in Common Ground. Een kunstwerk waarin Koster nieuwe vormen heeft gecreëerd en die de verschillende verhalen over thuis samenbrengt op het hoogkoor van de kerk met als doel een plek te creëren waar iedereen zich thuis kan voelen.

For many people in Alkmaar, the Grote Kerk Alkmaar is the living room of the city. But what exactly does that look like? And who feels at home there? The Grote Kerk has always played a central role in the history of Alkmaar. Even today, the church is a landmark for many residents. However, that is not the case for everyone.
For the artwork that Nynke Koster has made for the Grote Kerk, she visited several neighbourhoods of the city to talk to residents about their sense of home. She spoke with refugees from Syria, residents of Bloemwijk and people from the Moroccan and Turkish communities about the feeling of being at home. The artwork brings different communities together with there own cultures and identities. Koster has incorporated these different stories, together with casts of ornaments from the church, in her work Common Ground. She has created new forms, bringing together the different stories about 'home' in the apse of the church with the aim of creating a place where everyone can feel at home.

Nynke Koster

Nynke Koster studeerde aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag waar ze voor de richting Interieurarchitectuur en Meubelontwerpen koos. Haar werk balanceert op de grens tussen design en autonome kunst. Koster heeft een grote fascinatie voor de plaats die het verleden inneemt in ons collectief geheugen. Haar werk is altijd sterk onderbouwd door uitvoerig historisch onderzoek. Door te werken met een ‘afgiet’-methode herpositioneert Koster verhalen en objecten en daagt ze bezoekers uit om er letterlijk op een andere manier naar te kijken.

Nynke Koster studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, in the Interior Architecture and Furniture Design programme. Her work balances between design and autonomous art and centres her great fascination for the space the past occupies in our collective memory. Her work is always strongly supported by extensive historical research. By working with a casting method, Koster repositions stories and objects and challenges visitors to literally experience them in a different way.

Nieuw Licht

Common Ground is de tweede tentoonstelling binnen de serie Nieuw Licht – Kunst in de Grote Kerk Alkmaar. Voor dit programma wordt ieder jaar een kunstenaar uitgenodigd om een werk te maken geïnspireerd door, of reflecterend op, het erfgoed van de kerk.

Common Ground is the second exhibition in the series Nieuw Licht – Kunst in de Grote Kerk Alkmaar [New Light – Art in Grote Kerk Alkmaar]. As part of this programme, each year an artist is invited to create a work inspired by, or reflecting on, the heritage of the church.
